How to create a true black and white noir photo effect in photoshop

Are you trying to convert your images to black and white in Photoshop, but find you are left with an ugly grayscale image?

Try this instead:

  1. Open your image
  2. In the Layers palette, add an adjustment layer (split circle icon at bottom of palette).
  3. Choose Black and White from the list.
  4. Then add another adjustment layer
  5. This time select Levels from the list
  6. Adjust the left and right arrows

This works great for grayscale images, where you want the black to be black and white to be white and no ugly washed out grey tones.
